While I normally discuss matters of data protection and privacy, another topic I’m hugely passionate about is management – particularly new managers being promoted from specialist roles. When the same happened to me many years ago, it took a long time for me to learn the skills needed in order to effectively lead. The management guides out there were either difficult to read, or tried to enforce really cumbersome ways of doing things that just weren’t practical. With that in mind, I present to you:
This Is Not What I Signed Up For
A Survival Guide for First-Time Managers
In writing this book, I interviewed a number of successful and respected executives in order to find out the top challenges they faced when hiring and promoting first-time managers. These insights formed the basis of this book, which then details my own practical experiences, successes and challenges in moving from being a subject matter expert to managing numerous global teams over the years. The aim is to help you learn the key skills needed to look after a team, because leading a team is vastly different to being a technical expert!
Most importantly, I didn’t want the book to be a dry business book loaded with academic articles and models, instead it is a lighthearted look at how to handle Communication and Listening, Time Management, Delegation, Performance Management, and Conflict – the building blocks of effective leadership.
